The Price family have owned and farmed at Gelliargwellt Farm since 1902. In 1973 Price and Company farming Ltd was formed. The company established itself as one of the major milk producers in South Wales. They now farm over 800 acres and have a milking herd of 400 cows.

With the downward trends in farming in the eighties the company began to diversify into quarrying and landfill. A disused quarry was re-opened for the extraction of Blue Pennant Sandstone. The first major contract was the construction of the A469 – Llanbradach by-pass. Waste from the site was brought in and the lorries took stone back to the site.

In 1996 Bryn Quarry Limited was established as a separate company. In keeping with emerging trends the recycling side of the business was developed. Recycling hardcore, soils and builders rubble.

In 2000 with the increasing recycling demands, wood and green waste was brought to the site; a recycling unit was developed on site. Green waste was converted into compost and soil conditioner. This is sold commercial to Local Authorities, Utility Companies, Landscape Gardeners and the General Public. Whilst the wood is shredded in to sawdust and used as animal bedding by local farmers and ourselves.

In 2004 we were successful in registering and being accredited with “PAS100” by the Composting Association.

In 2005 a contract was agreed with Slough Heat and Power for wood chip to go to their plant in Slough to be used as an alternative means of generating electricity.

Our present operations consist of the following throughput per annum:

30,000 tonnes of green waste Recycled

20,000 Tonnes of wood Recycled

20,000 Tonnes of soil blended with compost

30,000 Tonnes of Hardcore Recycled

Thereby saving the need to landfill these waste products.

100,000 Tonnes Blue Pennant Sandstone quarried annually

As a further development we have recently purchased a picking station and baler so we can recycle the waste paper/cardboard and plastics from builders waste. Thereby diminishing our need to use outside specialist landfill sites.

We presently employ fifteen people on these operations and will be increasing the work force further with the new baling project, and in-vessel composting facility.

In 2005 a new company Bryn Compost Ltd (SE Wales Demonstration Facility) was set up in partnership with Wales Environmental Trust, Merthyr Tydfil C.B.C. and Torfaen C.B.C., in order to build the first In-Vessel composting unit in Wales.

We have recently completed building the In-Vessel facility to recycle 20,000 tonnes of food and catering waste into compost. We are also researching and developing this field of compost with the University of Wales Cardiff.

The facility commenced operations on 1st April 2006.
